Regular chiropractic care is an integral part of prenatal and postpartum care. It helps keep a pregnant mom feeling good and assists her in coping with the physical stresses of an ever changing body. Dr. Sara Croteau specializes in prenatal chiropractic and pediatric chiropractic as well. Feel free to contact the office with any specific questions regarding your individual concerns.

During pregnancy, women experience a number of neuromuscular and biochemical changes which respond favorably to gentle, safe, noninvasive chiropractic care. These changes include:

1. Relaxin -  a hormone released during pregnancy to allow the pelvis to expand in order to accommodate the growing baby.

  • As a side effect, the joints of the spine and pelvis become unstable and susceptible to mis-alignment from previously trivial forces ie. stepping off of a curb.
2.    General Body changes
  • increased weight gain and change in weight distribution
  • increased demand and fatigue on spinal and pelvic muscles
  • increased stress on spinal and pelvic ligaments and joints
  • increase in lumbar and thoracic spinal curves which further increase the above

Doctors of chiropractic can alleviate the uncomfortable symptoms arising from the muscular, ligamentous, and biomechanical stresses of the spinal and pelvic joints encountered during pregnancy. We accomplish this through the use of a number of highly specialized procedures and techniques such as gentle spinal adjustive procedures, therapeutic exercises, stretching, dietary/nutritional counseling and education about the birthing process.

Breech Babies and Chiropractic Care

Dr. Sara Croteau also practices the Webster Technique. This technique is based on balancing the sacrum (triangular shaped bone at the base of your spine) and pelvis to reduce torque of the uterus (or intrauterine constraint). The uterus is attached to the sacrum through the uterosacral ligaments. Though the Webster Technique is not a "turning technique" for breech babies - it is very successful in allowing a breech baby turn head down when the uterus is in a state of balance. The baby will have more room to get in the best possible position for birth!

Chiropractic care during pregnancy is safe for both mother and fetus. Spinal adjustments are especially gentle during pregnancy as far less force is required for the adjustment. Just as the increase in hormones which causes significant muscle and ligamentous relaxation. Special "adjustive" positions are also used to provide comfort and safety for both mom and fetus.

Chiropractic and Pregnancy Scientific Studies

Low Back Pain During Pregnancy

In this study, researchers identified the sacroiliac joints of the pelvis (frequently "adjusted" by chiropractors) as being responsible for the majority of low back pain cases in pregnancy. This is due to the significant number of hormonal and biomechanical changes occurring in the pelvis during pregnancy. Researchers found 7/10 women were helped by spinal manipulation in this study.

Chiropractic & Labor

According to Dr. Fallon, author and internationally recognized "chiropractic pediatrician", statistics from her office "have demonstrated that chiropractic adjustments effectively reduce the average amount of time spent in labor." Her data shows a nearly 25% reduction in the average labor times in those receiving chiropractic care versus the generally accepted average labor time - in women who had given birth in the past, there was a 33% reduction in average labor time.

As a former professional athlete returning to the sport full of former and current injuries, Chirocare has in only a short time reduced and solved problematic issues. This has allowed me to continue to train and focus more on what I need to do, pain and injury free. I will continue use Chirocare even post treatment as part of my training regime. They will keep me on track and continue to monitor my body to help prevent injury as well, so I can continue to push myself trying to catch up to the youth in my sport. My daughter also goes to Chirocare as she has entered the World level this coming year. It is a relief knowing that they will be able to monitor her as well and help prevent the injuries that I sustained over the years. If only I had these options years ago.
